Aug 13 Intention: To Fully Embrace Life's Experiences (read the parable, then see quotes and thoughts below)

There is an ancient Chinese story of a farmer who owned an old horse that till his fields. One day, the horse escaped into the hills and when the farmer's neighbors sympathized with the old man over his bad luck, the farmer replied, “Bad luck? Good luck? Who knows?”

A week later, the horse returned with a herd of horses from the hills and this time the neighbors congratulated the farmer on his good luck. His reply was, “Good luck? Bad luck? Who knows?”

Then, when the farmer's son was attempting to tame one of the wild horses, he fell off its back and broke his leg. Everyone thought this very bad luck. Not the farmer, whose only reaction was, “Bad luck? Good luck? Who knows?”

Some weeks later, the army marched into the village and conscripted every able-bodied youth they found there. When they saw the farmer's son with his broken leg, they let him off. Once again, the farmer's only reaction was, “Bad luck? Good luck? Who knows?”

There are no misfortunes in life. There are only missed fortunes… missed only because we fail to recognise and appreciate them as they truely are… fortunes, experiences, learning opportunities, seeds of wisdom…

Quotes and Thoughts

“Faith is the courage to live as if everything that happens is for our high”

“Every adversity, every failure, every heartache carries with it the seed of an equal or greater benefit.”

This parable teaches the importance of ‘detachment’ or learning to remain steady in the face of life’s ups and downs. If we allow ourselves to get swept away when things are ‘good’ or ‘bad’ we may find ourselves in an endless cycle of elation and despair. Instead of assigning value labels to our experiences, we can learn to embrace all experiences as offering us an opportunity to grow and evolve along life’s path. Mastering detachement takes years of practice. Please join my Naples Yoga Classes as we work together to strengthen this principle.
